Buying an Internet Business

November 28th, 2007

Money Ideas PicOne way of making money online is to buy an already established internet business.  Now maybe you’re wondering: Whee on earth can I find one of those?

Well its simple really if you peruse this list of my top six net business locations:

1. eBay
Although plagued with cons an silliness eBay is huge for selling internet businesses and if you can sort through the chaff and find the gems you could easily be making money of it in no time.

2. BusinessesForSale.com

Has a bit more credibility although the prices for the businesses are higher.  The old adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ is very true though so if you’re after quality then this is your place.

3. BizBuySell
Similar to the above with some very high-priced sites but hasn’t been around quite as long so smaller quantity of listings.

4. Digital Point
A great resource for marketing, webmastery and all thigns internet.  This forum provides users the ability to post their site up for sale and prices are much more reasonable than the above listings.

5. SitePoint
They charge for their listings so this may cause prices to be slightly inflated but not by much.  Has a more integrated buying and selling facility than other forums though so tends to be more reliable.

6. Web Hosting Talk
Although specializing in host chat and reviews this forum has an active site sales category.

7. SiteBazaar
Less well known but still worth a look for the cheaper end of the spectrum.

The 5 Biggest Online Payers

November 28th, 2007

Text Link Ads - These people work simply by sellling plain text links on participating sites to buyers.  So myself as a blog owner can sell links to other sites and the more popular your blog the more people you get wanting links and the higher they’ll pay to get them.  It briongs in a nice stream of income that stays steadier and easier to predict than your usual Adsense rollercoaster.

Adsense - The oldest and still the best click service provided by Google.  Although recent tightening of click requirements has made revenue dip a little.

Amazon Associates - If you can provide related products from your site (books are still the biggest payer) then you can set up affiliate links and product boxes from Amazon.  You can even go as far as having your own aStore.

TradeDoubler - One of the biggest and most extensive affiliate networks in the world along with its competitors Commission Junction, Affiliate Window, etc.

Casale Media - Great if you’re wanting to use pop-ups.  I no longer do use these and the entry requirements are quite high but I’d still recommend them for some users as the payouts are reasonable.

Listen to Google

November 28th, 2007

GoogleFar from being a search engine to trick Google is a search engine worth listening too.  I’ve found with all the sites I’ve launched and nurtured the best thing to do is follow the rules - don’t be spammy and provide a good service.  That alone is what will get you coverage on the SERP’s.  Ignore the rubbish and listen to Google’s own advice.

Protect Yourself Against the Blackhats

November 6th, 2007

Black Hat PhotoYou may have read previously about how black hat techniques can be used to take down competition - you!
If you are one of the tens of thousands of people who own a website and are trying to use the Google Adsense Publishing network to make money, you must be vigilant in order to prevent your Adsense account from being deleted. Make sure you read through the Google Adsense Terms of Service at:

https://www.google.com/adsense/localized-terms

Beyond this, you must be aware of what sort of activity can and likely will result in the cancellation of your account. Some of these activities can be caused by you inadvertently. Also, there are many ways for other people to get your account cancelled. Here are some important issues to know:

1.) Invalid clicks - This is the number 1 reason that Google Adsense Publisher accounts get deleted. An ‘invalid click’ is defined by Google as ANY type of click on an ad that comes from any source other than a legitimate visitor to your site. This means that you can generate an invalid click by making changes to your site layout and inadvertently clicking on one of your own ads. This can also occur if a friend or family member goes to your site and clicks on a few ads ‘to help you out’. These clicks can also be generated if you sign up for ANY SORT of paid traffic or ‘click exchange’ programs, in which people are directed to your site by illicit means or as part of a ‘pay-to-click’ program. NEVER use any sort of paid traffic on your site. If Google detects multiple clicks coming from the same IP address, or if they detect a sharp rise in your clicks per day, you WILL have your account closed, typically with no questions asked.Google Logo

More importantly, there is a growing trend amongst so-called ‘blackhat SEO’ practitioners to go and click multiple times on the ads on competitor’s sites. You’d think that this would only help you, but Google isn’t going to try very hard to distinguish whether or not the multiple clicks are coming from paid traffic or your buddy or someone else. All Google needs to see is activity that is out of the ordinary and you will likely be kicked from the program.

To protect yourself from invalid clicks, you must use tools available to any Adsense Publisher to protect yourself. If you have a highspeed internet connection, you can go to your Google Adsense account and enter your own IP address so when you go to your own site you won’t see any ads. No ads equals nothing to inadvertently click. Also, there are third-party scripts that can automatically detect when multiple clicks are occurring from the same IP address, and then block the ads from appearing to that person. You can use Google’s search engine to find these third-party tools to help insulate your site from illicit activity.

2.) Using Google Adsense on inappropriate sites - Did you know that you aren’t supposed to use Google Adsense ads on gambling-related sites, sites with pornographic content, or sites written in Arabic? These are a few restricted uses for the Google Adsense network among others. Be certain you understand what types of sites Google wants their ads to appear on, and make sure you never try to get away with putting Adsense ads on a banned type of site. It isn’t worth losing the ability to use Google Adsense ads on all of your sites for the sake of adding one site with inappropriate content.

3.) Junk sites - This would include any site that only uses ’scraped content’, in other words article directories that 1,000 other sites use. This can also include sites that are simply ugly, or aren’t updated regularly. This can also even include sites that are built with common site-building software that uses variations on only a few templates. Google has the ability to detect widespread templates and will penalize your site if you use them.

To avoid this sort of problem, simply spend some time building your site. Make sure the template is unique to your site or sites by actually creating one yourself or hiring someone to do it for you. Write your own articles for your site, or at least re-write any articles you get from article directories. Update your site on a regular basis by swapping articles or using RSS feeds to make the page content auto-update. It is suspected by many Adsense pros that many of the 1000s of sudden Adsense account deletions are simply to get rid of cookie-cutter site networks, so don’t fall in the habit of being lazy with your site creation and maintenance.

There are other ways to get yourself banned from the Google Adsense network, but these are the main ones to be aware of. Always stay up-to-date on information that Google sends out about their advertising network, and make sure you frequent message boards populated by other Google Adsense Publishers. If you are vigilant and ensure that your back is covered at all times, you won’t have to worry about losing your Adsense privileges.

Has Paid Blogging Been a Bad Path?

November 6th, 2007

Paid Blogging has taken the internet by storm. It seems like everyone has a blog these days on everything from celebrities to technology to their own personal family blogs. I admit, that I too have recently gotten caught up in the paid blogging world.

It is extremely hard to actually make a profitable income simply by blogging. Not only is it time consuming, but you have to have a blog with a lot of readers and traffic. This will place you higher in the google index rating system, thus getting you higher money making opportunities.

A few years ago people blogged about whatever was on their mind or whatever was going on in their life. The most popular blogs were those that resembled diaries with frequent entries about what was going on. Soon followed were blogs by people that informed you of things like the news, or celebrity sightings. Not much later, corporations and companies followed suit and created corporate blogs. They usually have an upper level employee or two add content to the blog about what is going on within the company such as new stuff, and old stuff.

Then the great idea came along that companies will pay people like me and you to put ads within their own blogs and pay them. The company makes out since they are only paying a few dollars for a lot of traffic and the blogger makes out since to them its easy money to throw an ad in between all the content already on their blog.

The problem now is that some bloggers have exhausted all of their opportunities and they sit around and check a few times daily for new or higher paying opportunities. Some people make it a full time job, as I have seen people make over $2000 per month on their blogs. However in order to do this, you would most likely have to have a few blogs of different topics, all with high index ratings, and voila, you are in.

Blogging is a great pocket money job for the average person, but for the more dedicated blogger, it can be a great opportunity. My only worry is that this paid blogging is a trend that will most likely phase out within a few years, leaving a lot of bloggers bored, or thirsty for more money.

Exploit Facebook

November 6th, 2007

Exploit Facebook for MoneyJust a quick tip to say: If you have the skill and an idea why not put together an app for Facebook users to add to their profile which you can use to gather ad revenue from. Even better would be to link it into a merchant account from Amazon or EBay for example.
